We partnered with CorrelAid Switzerland to host a hackathon to explore Swiss research related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Participants analysed publicly available grant data from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), including titles, keywords, abstracts, and disciplines of individual grants, along with basic demographics of grant recipients. They then developed data visualisations to illuminate various aspects of research on SDGs in Switzerland.

Monitoring of diversity is an important first step towards reducing inequalities in access to scientific innovation and research. We contribute to monitoring of author diversity in research outputs at the University of Basel by conducting an analysis of gender distribution in scientific publications. We categorized authors’ gender based on authors’ first names and visualized temporal trends between 2000 and 2020 in gender distribution for all faculties of the University of Basel.

We used text-mining techniques with existing search queries to identify University of Basel’s research output related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The European Research Council is a crucial source of funding for European science. Its funding instruments are highly competitive and the average success rate is only about 12%. Crucially, an analysis of country differences suggests large disparities associated with long-standing differences in investment in research and innovation between countries.

We co-organized the Woman in Data Science Conference Basel. Keynotes, lightning talks, and panel discussions included leaders and researchers from the University of Basel, Google, NZZ Mediengruppe and more. All genders were invited to participate in the conference, which featured exclusively female speakers and mentors from industry and academia doing outstanding work in Data Science.
